- SiCLONE TO RELEASE MAC IIx VERSION OF 68030 ACCELERATOR
-
- MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA, June 1, 1989 - SiCLONE Sales and Engineering Corporation,
- the leading manufacturer of accelerators for the Apple Macintosh II series of
- personal computers, today announced the Macintosh IIx version of its Si3033
- accelerator. SiCLONE's flagship product adds a 33.3MHz 68030 with high-speed
- 64K cache to any Macintosh II or IIx, and provides a 2.5x speed increase over
- the stock CPU. The Si3033 boosts the Macintosh to the highest performance ever,
- according to a report in the June 1989 MacUser Magazine. It sells to a diverse
- market of architects, electrical and mechanical engineers, software developers,
- and publishers, as well as companies using the Mac II or IIx as a network file
- server. SiCLONE also announced new Cache Control software, a CPU extraction
- tool for resellers, and, in a separate promotion, discounts for certified Apple
- developers.
-
- The Mac IIx version of the Si3033, which provides identical performance to t
- Mac II version, is scheduled to ship in mid-June, according to Kay Lemon,
- Director of Marketing for SiCLONE. "We are responding as quickly as possible to
- the incredible market demand for a Mac IIx version," said Lemon. "When we first
- released the Si3033 we felt the demand would be greatest for the Mac II
- version, because the Mac II doesn't have a 68030. As it turns out, the Mac IIx
- is selling better than the Mac II into high-end markets, and these people are
- more concerned with performance than processor type. We are only too happy to
- offer these markets the performance they need."
-
- The Si3033, originally released in January 1989, replaces the original 16MHz
- 68020 or 68030 with a 33.3MHz version of the Motorola 68030, Apple's platform
- for high-end Macintoshes. An optional 33.3MHz 68882 math co-processor
- supersedes the original 16MHz 68881 (or 68882 in the Mac IIx).
-
- The Si3033 consists of two cards: an accelerator module, with the 68030/6888
- and a 64K burst-mode instruction and data cache; and an adapter module, which
- adapts the accelerator to the Mac II or IIx motherboard, respectively. The Mac
- II adapter plugs into the 68020 and MMU (Memory Management Unit) sockets, and
- provides sockets for these two chips. The new Mac IIx adapter plugs into the
- 68030 socket and provides a socket for the 16MHz 68030.
-
- By providing sockets for the original 16MHz parts, the Si3033 can be switche
- on and off easily by the end-user. To date, the Si3033 is the only Mac II/IIx
- CPU upgrade with this unique feature. For example, many copy protection schemes
- do not work at 33.3MHz. To disengage the Si3033, the user simply presses the
- interrupt switch during power-up, and the Mac starts up with the Si3033 turned
- off. Then the protected software is installed onto the hard disk, and the
- Si3033 is turned back on. This feature is also ideal for developers who need
- high performance to compile and design quickly, but also want to check
- compatibility and performance of their product on the stock Macintosh. The
- Si3033 stays on or off even if the user issues a Restart command (you must
- press the reset button or power down to change modes).
-
- SiCLONE also announced a new version of the Si3033 Cache Control CDEV. The
- Cache Control CDEV allows the user to disable the instruction and data caches
- of the 68030 and the burst mode for either cache. It tells the user when the
- accelerator is on or off, and whether the optional 33.3MHz 68882 is installed.
- During system startup, an Si3033 icon appears at the bottom of the screen,
- indicating the accelerator is engaged. When the user starts up in 16MHz mode
- the Si3033 icon has an "X" over it. The Cache Control CDEV includes a Fast
- SANE INIT which greatly increases the speed of all SANE (Standard Apple
- Numerics Environment) floating-point math calculations. Unlike other
- third-party SANE INITs, the Si3033 version is optimized for the 68882, and can
- be switched on and off instantly without restarting the Macintosh. A 68882 icon
- appears at the bottom of the screen during startup to indicate the Fast SANE is
- on. The latest version of Cache Control also repairs a bug in the Macintosh
- system software. This bug causes faulty floppy disk operation with some Mac IIs
- when the accelerator is on. Updates of the Cache Control software are available
- free at any SiCLONE reseller, over AppleLink (Software Updates menu) or, if the
- user returns the disk, directly from SiCLONE.
-
- End users and resellers alike are eagerly awaiting shipment of the Mac IIx
- version. "Our customers are sitting on the edge of their seats," says Larry
- Bullard, Apple's Engineering Business Development Executive for the Phoenix
- region. "The Si3033's performance really impressed our Certified Engineering
- Resellers at the recent Product Views we held in Phoenix and Las Vegas. They
- use the Mac IIx in most of their demonstrations, and they've been asking for
- this version of the Si3033 since the shows." SiCLONE's Lemon noted several
- orders of 10+ units each of the new version pending release, including VARs,
- dealers, system integrators, and several key members of the developer
- community.
